February is American Heart Month, and there’s no better way to celebrate than by showing our tickers some extra love!
Did you know that heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States? The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that one person dies every 36 seconds in the US from cardiovascular disease.

As stated earlier, heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. With that said, there are pre-existing conditions that can increase your likelihood of developing heart disease. The big three are:
- High blood pressure
- High blood cholesterol
Other factors that increase the likelihood of heart disease are diabetes, obesity, unhealthy diet, physical inactivity, and excessive alcohol use. If you and/or someone you love fall into any of these categories, it’s critical that you take the necessary steps to mitigate those issues.

The American Heart Association recommends that adults get at least 150 minutes per week of moderate-intensity aerobic activity or 75 minutes per week of vigorous aerobic activity. You can also do a combination of both. Here are four of our favorites.
Seems too easy? Think again. Walking, especially speed walking, is a great way to strengthen your heart. What makes walking so great is its versatility. You can walk anywhere at any time. Not only that, if you’re not as fit as you’d like, walking is much easier on your joints than the vast majority of exercises
While you might think of lazy summer afternoons by the pool when it comes to swimming, it makes a killer workout. Swimming is easy on your joints and will strengthen your body and heart simultaneously.
Hopping on your bike is an excellent method to not only get from point A to point B but also to strengthen your cardiovascular health. Since you use large muscles in your legs to pedal, your heart will be working hard to keep up and you’ll watch the calories burn away!
As great as weight training is for building muscle, weight training will also strengthen your heart and support bone health. Don’t have access to a gym or weights? No problem! Your body weight will do just fine.
