Beet root is all the rage these days. Chances are that you’ve heard how great it is for athletes. This is attributed to the nitrates that exist within the beet roots. Your body converts these nitrates into nitric oxide, which can help oxygenation levels and overall circulation.
This is obviously great for athletes, but did you know that seniors could benefit from this too? According to a study published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, seniors 69 and older who were given a single dose of beet root juice every day for one week saw improvements with endurance. The study focused on seniors over 69 with heart conditions that involved preserved ejection fraction (HFPEF).
The study was split into two groups:
- The first group of seniors were given just one single dose of beet root juice at the beginning of the study.
- The second group of seniors were given daily doses for one week, 45 minutes prior to cycling exercise tests.
The results were astonishing. The seniors from the second group saw a 24% increase in endurance as compared to the first group. Participants also noticed that their resting and post-workout blood pressure levels were lower than they had been before. That’s the power of the beet root!
