Kosher – What Does It Mean + How to Find

When a product is described as “Kosher,” this means that the product follows the dietary guidelines of traditional Jewish law.

These guidelines dictate how food should be prepared, processed and produced. In addition, some foods are forbidden to be eaten together, such as meat and dairy.

To learn more about Kosher guidelines, check out this great resource by OK Kosher.

Who certifies our products and how does it work?

Our products are certified by OK Kosher. In order to certify products as Kosher, we must ensure our ingredients and manufacturing process is in alignment with the guidelines.

This includes an initial visit by a rabbi and subsequent visits to ensure the guidelines are consistently being followed.

Organic – What It Means + How to Find

You might have seen “organic” posted on various products in your local market, but what does it actually mean?

The US Department of Agriculture defines organic products as:

…grown and processed according to federal guidelines addressing, among many factors, soil quality, animal raising practices, pest and weed control, and use of additives. Organic producers rely on natural substances and physical, mechanical, or biologically based farming methods to the fullest extent possible.

USDA, “Organic 101: What the USDA Label Means

What is most important to remember is that organic products cannot be grown in soil that contains prohibited substances, such as synthetic fertilizers and pesticides. To learn more about these prohibited substances, check out this USDA blog.

Only products that follow these guidelines may use the USDA Organic symbol.

Who certifies our products and how does it work?

Our products are certified by the USDA. The USDA requires that organic farmers and handlers document their processes every year. In addition, all parties must comply with on-site inspection for every step of the  process, including weed and pest management, water system, contamination and crop health.

To certify ingredients and products as organic, five steps must be confirmed and monitored by a third party certifier to ensure compliance. We use QAI.

  • Implement the plan and have it reviewed by a certified agent.
  • Participate in inspection.
  • Ensure the inspection is reviewed by a certified agent.
  • Receive decision/approval.

To learn more about this process, check out the USDA website.
