Video games, social media, television and cool air conditioning or warm heaters (depending on the weather), can make some kids prefer the indoors. Some can go hours with their eyes glued to a screen without realizing that the whole day has passed by them. And, if you happen to be the same way, children will see it as normal and continue with the same habits. What we have to do as parents is get our kids more active and outdoors for a healthier and happier lifestyle! Plus, it might help cut down on your electricity bill!
Here’s a few tips to get those kids away from the screen and out in the sun:
- Set an example
Whether we like it or not, kids imitate their parents. If you’re an avid gardener, swimmer, or a little of both then your kids will surprisingly want to join you.
- Get kids to help
Planting new fruits and veggies in your garden, raking leaves (and jumping in the piles) and other chores are physical activities that also teach responsibility. These little contributions can make kids feel valued and included. Reward them with a trip to the park or a playdate with friends for helping you in the yard.
- Play with them
We can all be exhausted, but push yourself to create memories and healthy habits. Take them outside and kick a soccer ball back and forth, bring some chalk for a hopscotch game, ride bikes or go on a walk with them.
- Indoor games
Sometimes the weather won’t allow outdoor play time so you’ll have to improvise and play some physical games inside to get you and the kids off the couch! Try hide-n-seek, obstacle courses made from couch cushions and chairs, dancing to music, keeping a balloon off the ground and even cooking a yummy healthy meal with them.
