You don’t have to have a kid to dye eggs for Easter, it’s a fun activity for all ages! Wouldn’t it be nice if it could be done without the artificial dyes though? Well, it can! Certain fruits, herbs, and veggies mixed with water and vinegar can make the dyes for the eggs so you don’t have to miss out on this fun holiday activity!
To make the dye, take 4 cups of mashed fruits and veggies, or 4 tablespoons of herbs, and boil them in 4 cups of water and 2 tablespoons of white vinegar. Simmer for 30 minutes. Then, strain out the fruits and vegetables… the remaining liquid is your dye!
Here are the colors and the food items that make them:
- Yellow/Orange- Yellow onion skins
- Bright Yellow- Tumeric or cumin
- Pink/Red- Red beets
- Brown- Coffee
- Purple- Blackberries or blueberries
- Orange/Red- Chili powder or paprika
- Blue- Red cabbage
- Green- Spinach
When it comes to dying the eggs, you can either hard boil them (which is the normal way of doing it) OR you can poke a little hole at the top and bottom, blow out the whites and yolk (save them for breakfast or baking) and dye the fully intake hollowed out eggshells!
