Heading into a new year we make resolutions and goals of things we are going to do different, things we want to achieve, and good habits we want to add into our lives. We want to add in a healthy diet, we want to work out more, we want to make more money, we want to travel, we want to learn a new language, etc. What we don’t think of as often is what we need to let go and leave behind. Letting go of bad habits is just as important (if not more) than adding in new habits. By letting go of something you are bettering yourself already.
Here’s a list of 10 things you should leave behind in 2015!
1. Being stuck in the past
It is hard to move forward with something holding you back. If you live in the present and are working towards the future, you’ll find it’s a lot easier to reach your goals.
2. Breaking promises
Don’t lose people’s trust. If you don’t think you’ll be able to follow through with something then don’t make a promise that you can’t keep.
3. Comparing yourself to others
The only person you should be trying to compete against is your past self.
4. Being late
Make a point to be 5-15 minutes early to everything. My mom used to always tell me “if you’re on time, you’re late.” You will feel less stressed and more prepared if you give yourself a little extra time. This also helps in the case of an unforeseeable event such as an accident on the way to work, realizing you are low on gas, etc.
5. Being underprepared
This goes hand-in-hand with being late. Give yourself time to organize and be ready for whatever your days’ task is. Know what you need to have for the day and get it ready the night before so you can wake up and be ready.
6. Saying “I can’t”
Whether you think you can or think you can’t, you will always be right. It’s all about mindset.
7. Buying things you don’t need
Having stuff is not a measurement of your success.
8. Blaming others for your mistakes
If you messed up, take responsibility for it and apologize. Own up to your mistakes and be honest.
9. Hanging out with negative people
This will only bring you down and make it harder for you to reach your goals.
10. Trying to do everything alone
It’s always beneficial to get another person’s opinion or way of doing things. Being social and working with others is important to our mental health also.
