What is Chronic Fatigue?

SHARE

You know the feeling–dragging lethargic energy, that delays all of your actions and makes you want to curl up on the couch (and not go to the gym). Normally, this feeling comes after a long day of work, a tough workout or any other sort of activity that demands your best energy.

Fatigue and tiredness can be a normal and temporary struggle for many.

But for others, a more extreme (and sometimes debilitating) type of fatigue plagues their day-to-day lives. For years, some have dealt with the unwanted “advice” to their woes like, “You should probably exercise more” or “You’re just lazy!” But thanks to science, it’s gaining more the serious attention it deserves with the label of chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS).

The Mayo Clinic describes this condition as a “complicated disorder characterized by extreme fatigue that can’t be explained by any underlying medical condition.” They also go on to state that rest doesn’t normally improve the fatigue, and yet mental and physical activity could make it worse. Yikes. What a rough double standard?

The cause is still unclear, but experts have a few theories in mind:

  • Viral infections
  • Immune system problems
  • Hormonal imbalances
  • Stress or psychological issues

Symptoms might include: fatigue, loss of concentration, headaches, refreshing sleep and extreme exhaustion lasting more than 24 hours after physical or mental exercise.

There’s no known cure, but medical experts are beginning to take the condition more seriously. Hopefully, a new plan can be developed to help those with CPS.
