We always knew processed meats were bad for us, but now we have proof.
I’m sure you’ve seen the headlines and hashtags about the study done by World Health Organization ruling processed meats as carcinogenic to humans.
This means bacon and hot dogs are in the same category as asbestos, tobacco smoke, and formaldehyde.
Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer among American adults and that is the one that had the strongest link to eating these food products. According to the Lancet Oncology report, “for each 50 grams of processed meat eaten per day, the risk of colorectal cancer grew by 18%. In addition, for each 100 grams of red meat eaten per day, the risk of colorectal cancer rose by 17%.” Red meat is being ruled as “probably carcinogenic.”
This may be very upsetting news for some people and you may be screaming: “NOOO, NOT BACON!” But the numbers don’t lie.
Eating a mainly plant-based diet to get the most nutrition is the best way to a healthy you. You don’t need to completely eliminate red meats, but just be cautious of how much you are eating and fill yourself up on greens first!
